Colonial Kids Day Camp at Pottsgrove Manor

New this year, Pottsgrove Manor will host a week-long history day camp that will immerse children in early Pennsylvania life in the historic setting of colonial ironmaster John Potts' manor house and grounds.

The camp will run from Monday, July 11th through Friday, July 15th, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Campers will experience and participate in the crafts, chores, and pastimes of colonial kids, while learning facts and stories about our local colonial history and about the family, servants, and slaves of John Potts. Coordinating with each day's theme, hands-on activities led by Pottsgrove Manor staff will highlight skills of the 18th century.

Crafts will include making dipped candles, churning butter, writing with quill and ink, and more.
This camp is for children entering grades 4-6 in the fall of 2011.
The cost is $100 per child. Spaces are limited;
registration is required by June 27th.

Pottsgrove Manor, home of John Potts, colonial ironmaster and founder of Pottstown, is located at 100 West King Street near the intersection of King Street and Route 100, just off Route 422, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Pottsgrove Manor is operated by Montgomery County under the direction of the Parks and Heritage Services Department.

Regular museum hours are: Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00Êa.m. to 4:00 p.m. & Sunday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Tours are given on the hour; last tour of the day begins as 3:00 p.m. Groups of 10 or more should pre-register by calling 610.326.4014.

"Spirituous Liquors and
Healthful Distillations:
Alcohol in Colonial America"

Alcohol was a part of everyday life in the eighteenth century, and colonists from all walks of life used many types of alcohol in a variety of ways.
This exhibit will focus on the making, use, and abuse of alcohol in the PottsÕ world.
Programming throughout the year will incorporate some of the exhibit themes. All ages; $2 per person suggested donation.

Living History Sundays

Pottsgrove Manor's living history volunteers will demonstrate 18th century trades, crafts, and pastimes. You may even get to join in! Activities will vary from week to week; call the site to find out what will be offered the day of your visit. All ages; $2 per person suggested donation.

Saturday, September 24th from 11:00 am Ð 2:00 pm
River Walk & Picnic

Pottsgrove Manor staff will lead visitors on a walking tour from the Manor to the Riverfront Park. Along the way, we'll discuss the importance of the Manatawny Creek and the Schuylkill River to the ironworking business of the Potts family. We'll stop for a picnic lunch (provided) before heading back to the Manor. All ages; fee: $15 per person; bring water and wear comfortable shoes. Registration required by September 20th.

Saturday, October 22nd from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm
An Apple a Day, the Colonial Way
Learn how apples would be made into hard cider, and try your hand at working the cider press. Watch the colonial cooks as they make apple butter and other historic apple recipes. Young visitors can make a themed craft to take home. All ages; $2 per person suggested donation.

'The Virtues of the Brew': Colonial Brewing Demonstration

See the art of colonial beer brewing in Pottsgrove ManorÕs kitchen. All ages; $2 per person suggested donation.

Twelfth Night Tours

Enjoy a guided tour of Pottsgrove Manor, decorated for the holidays. Learn about traditional English celebrations of Twelfth Night and how they differed from our modern Christmas celebrations. All ages; $2 per person suggested donation.

Pottsgrove Manor by Candlelight

Be part of the hustle and bustle as we celebrate the holidays, colonial-style. Tour the manor house by candlelight as costumed interpreters portray the 18th century residents of Pottsgrove Manor celebrating Twelfth Night. All ages; $2 per person suggested donation.

Saturday, January 21st, 2012 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm Open Hearth Cooking DemonstrationÑ
'A Distillation of Desserts'

See whatÕs cooking in the colonial kitchen! Pottsgrove Manor's cooks will prepare authentic 18th century recipes for sweets and treats made with rum, wine, and other libations. All ages; $2 per person suggested donation.

Whether you have specific talents or just want to be a part of an enduring legacy, there's a part for you to play here.

 

 

 

Pottsgrove's Volunteers can help monitor the rooms as visitors enjoy the exhibits at yearly events, work in the shop, in the garden, or help gather reseach for special exhibits throughout the year.

Pottsgrove's costumed Interpreters research and dress authentically as the People of Pottsgrove, portraying Potts' family members, servants with historical expertise in household duties, or craftspeople, cooks, musicians and other 18th century personalities.


 


Museum Guides learn the details about the Potts family, their history and the way of life in 18th century Montgomery County, taking guests on guided tours of the house.


Junior volunteers experience Living History firsthand at the Manor
